Two electric standing desk frames side by side in a home office, seen from the side: one with the leg in the middle of the foot, one with the leg near the back of the foot.

T-Frame vs C-Frame Standing Desk: What the Letter Changes

Where the leg stands on the foot is all the letter decides. Knee room, wall clearance, the crossbar and stability belong to the frame, and the makers disagree on several. The figures for Uplift, FlexiSpot and Autonomous, and the one case where the letter decides for you: a 24 in (61 cm) deep top.

A compact electric standing desk with a single monitor set against the wall of a small bedroom, a bed close beside it, the desk lowered to sitting height.

Standing Desk for a Small Home Office? Start With the Minimum Height

Makers lead with how high a standing desk goes. In a spare bedroom the numbers that decide it are how low it comes down, how deep the top is and how wide your monitors are. Ten desks compared on those three, with a pick for a narrow room, a shorter person, a tight budget and an app.

Two monitors on a single dual monitor arm clamped to the back edge of a small home office desk, the screens slightly wider than the desk.

Dual Monitor Arm for a Home Office: Check the Minimum Weight and the Desk

A light monitor can be too light for a gas spring arm, and a flat-pack top has its own limit for a clamp's concentrated load. Ergotron, HUANUO and VIVO arms against Dell panel weights and IKEA tabletop limits, with a pick for a solid desk, a light panel, an ultrawide and a flat-pack top.

Two desks side by side in a small home office, seen from the side: a fixed-height gaming desk with a monitor and a game controller, and a lower height-adjustable desk with a keyboard.

Best Desk Height for Gaming: Keyboard at Elbow Height, as for Work

A gaming desk and an office desk answer to the same keyboard rule, then land near opposite ends of one guideline. The two heights, the desks that sit on each, the chair-and-footrest fix for a fixed desk, and when an adjustable frame makes more sense.

A small bedroom with a desk against the wall beside the window, daylight falling across the desk from the side, a monitor on the desk and the bed visible on the far side of the room.

Where to Put a Desk in a Bedroom? Beside the Window, Not Facing It

A bedroom was built for sleeping: its window is the emergency exit, its outlets follow a spacing rule, and one may go off with the switch by the door. Which wall the desk belongs on, what a desk under the window, with its back to the door or in the closet gives up, and the switch test to run first.

A desk, a chair, and the screens on them decide how the room feels after a long day. This category covers standing desks, monitor arms, chairs, docking stations, keyboards, webcams and the rest of the desk setup, with the constraints of a real house in mind: small rooms, shared spaces, and a desk that was never built for two monitors.

We choose on measurable specifications: the height range of a desk against the height of the person using it, the load capacity and reach of a monitor arm against the weight and size of the screens, the ports and power delivery of a dock against the laptop it has to feed. Where fit depends on a measurement you have to take yourself, we tell you which one.

Smart features come last in that order. A desk that remembers heights is useful; a desk that does not go low enough is not, however smart it is.
