Understand

What the gear does, and where it falls short.

Someone is often home, deliveries arrive during the day, and a doorbell or camera that alerts on every passing car is a nuisance rather than protection. We look at video doorbells, indoor and outdoor cameras, smart locks, and sensors: what they can cover, and what they cannot.

Each guide rests on what can be checked: what a device records and for how long, how far it sees, what it needs from your Wi-Fi and power, what the subscription adds, and which platforms it talks to. Where a manufacturer publishes a number, we use that number and say where it came from.

Start with the buying guides if you are choosing, or with the explainers if you already own a device and want to know what it is doing.

These guides are independent, and we do not sell placements. See the affiliate disclosure and how we work.
