Do Ring Cameras Work Without Wi-Fi? What Stops, What Keeps Working, and the Three Real Exceptions
A Ring camera does not buffer footage to upload later, so an outage is simply lost time. What stops the moment Wi-Fi drops, what an Alarm Pro, Power over Ethernet, and a phone hotspot each change, and what local storage does not.

What to know
- Ring states its doorbells and cameras require an active internet connection. Offline, there is no live view, no alerts, and no recording, and nothing is saved for later.
- A Ring Alarm Pro with a subscription can keep cameras on its eero network online over cellular data during an internet outage (3 GB a month included), but in a power outage it shuts off Wi-Fi unless Power Packs are attached.
- Power over Ethernet models (Wired Doorbell 4K Elite, Stick Up Cam Elite, PoE versions of Outdoor and Spotlight Cams) remove the Wi-Fi link but still need internet behind the router.
- Ring Edge local storage on an Alarm Pro changes where 1080p video is stored, not whether the cameras need a connection.
- A phone hotspot works like any other Wi-Fi network for setup, with cellular data use of 2 to 15 Mbps per device while streaming.
Ring's own Wi-Fi guidance states it in one line: Ring doorbells and cameras require an active internet connection to function. Cut the Wi-Fi and a Ring camera stops streaming live video, stops sending alerts, and stops recording, and it does not buffer footage to upload later. There are three real exceptions, and none of them is "the camera keeps working on its own": a Ring Alarm Pro can keep your cameras online over cellular data during an internet outage, Power over Ethernet models replace Wi-Fi with a cable but still need the internet behind it, and a phone hotspot is simply a different Wi-Fi network.
People mean four different things by "without Wi-Fi": the router is down, the internet is down but the router is up, the power is out, or there is no Wi-Fi at the location at all. Each has a different answer. This is based on Ring's current support documentation, checked in September 2026.
What a Ring camera does when the connection drops
Ring's offline devices guide is blunt about the consequences: if your Ring device falls offline, you will not be able to view live video, get alerts, or record events. The cameras have no local storage of their own and no cellular radio. Motion detection hardware may still fire, but with nowhere to send the event, nothing is kept, and Ring's motion documentation says the same thing from the other side: if your device is offline, it will not detect motion.
What the device does instead is try to reconnect, and its status light tells you where it is in that process. The Ring app marks the device with an offline icon and, when you tap it, an error code such as "P1-65". When the network comes back, the device reconnects on its own in most cases; if it does not, Device Health has a Reconnect option, and the doorbell may need a power cycle.
The Ring Chime is in the same position. It is a Wi-Fi speaker that relays doorbell presses from the cloud, so when the network is down it does not ring, and it shows its own connection-failure light patterns.
Four different "without Wi-Fi" situations
Your Wi-Fi router is down or unreachable. The camera has no path to the internet. Everything stops until the router is back. This is also what happens when the camera simply sits too far from the router: Ring's Wi-Fi recommendations put the signal strength (RSSI) thresholds at 0 to -60 for a strong connection, -60 to -70 as okay, -70 to -80 as poor with possible delays and interruptions, and -80 or worse as intermittent service or falling offline. A camera in that last band is "without Wi-Fi" for part of every day.
Your internet is down but the router is up. The camera stays connected to Wi-Fi, but Ring's service is in the cloud, so the result is the same: no live view, no alerts, no recordings. On a doorbell this is the "white light flashing on the left" setup failure, which Ring defines as connected to Wi-Fi but unable to reach Ring's servers or the internet.
The power is out. A wired doorbell or plug-in camera loses power outright. A battery doorbell or battery camera keeps running, but your router does not, so the device is offline anyway. The only Ring setup that bridges a power outage is an Alarm Pro with Power Packs (see below).
There is no Wi-Fi at the location. A Ring camera cannot be set up without a network, and it cannot run standalone afterward. The options are a Wi-Fi network you create (a phone or dedicated hotspot), a PoE model on a wired network, or an Alarm Pro using cellular data as its internet.
Ring Alarm Pro: the one way to keep cameras online without home internet
The Ring Alarm Pro base station has a built-in eero Wi-Fi 6 router and a cellular modem. With a compatible Ring subscription, its 24/7 Backup Internet feature switches the whole eero network, including any Ring cameras on it, to cellular data when the home internet fails. Ring's plan page describes it as keeping your Alarm Pro system and connected devices online 24/7 with 3 GB of data included every month and extra data at $1 per gigabyte. Alarm Pro switches back to the regular connection automatically when it returns.
The fine print matters. The cameras must be on the Alarm Pro's eero network, not on a separate router. Three gigabytes of cellular data is not a lot of video: Ring's upload table lists 2 Mbps per 1080p device and 15 Mbps per 4K device, so a busy 4K doorbell can consume the monthly allowance quickly, and Ring's own 24/7 Recording page warns that continuous recording uses more bandwidth daily. And backup internet solves an internet outage, not a power outage. Ring states that when the power goes out the base station runs on its internal battery for up to 24 hours in Low Power Mode, and in that mode it turns off most functions and Wi-Fi to save energy, even if the internet is up. You can still arm and disarm, and professional monitoring still receives alarm signals, but the cameras go dark. Keeping them up through a blackout requires Ring Power Packs: up to three can be attached, each providing up to eight hours, and with them the Alarm Pro keeps running its features including 24/7 Backup Internet.
Power over Ethernet: no Wi-Fi, still needs internet
Ring's PoE devices, which include the Wired Doorbell 4K Elite, the Stick Up Cam Elite, and the PoE versions of the Outdoor Cam Plus, Outdoor Cam 4K Pro, and Spotlight Cam 4K Pro, get power and data through one Ethernet cable. Ring's PoE guide describes it as wiring power and internet together, which takes the Wi-Fi link out of the chain entirely. It needs a PoE-capable switch or injector, since most home routers do not supply PoE, Cat 5e or better cabling (Ring suggests Cat 6 for long runs), a maximum run of 100 meters (328 feet), and for the Wired Doorbell 4K Elite specifically a PoE+ (802.3at) source.
That removes Wi-Fi from the equation, and it is the right answer for a detached garage or a metal-clad wall where the signal never reaches. It does not remove the internet from the equation. A PoE camera plugged into a router with no upstream connection is in exactly the same state as a Wi-Fi camera with the internet down.
Local storage does not mean offline operation
Ring Edge lets a Ring Alarm Pro store and process video from enrolled 1080p doorbells and cameras on a microSD card in the base station instead of in the cloud. It changes where recordings live, not whether the devices need a connection: Ring's Ring Edge documentation requires a compatible subscription, requires the cameras to be on the Alarm Pro's eero network, and does not support 2K or 4K devices. Ring does not document Ring Edge as a way to keep recording during an internet outage, so do not buy an Alarm Pro on that assumption; buy it for the cellular backup, and treat local storage as a privacy feature.
Setting up a Ring camera on a phone hotspot
Ring's setup documentation does not have a hotspot section, but a hotspot is a Wi-Fi network with an internet connection, so the normal setup rules apply. The network name should not contain special characters such as apostrophes or symbols, some Ring devices only join 2.4 GHz networks, and the phone running the hotspot should stay near the device during setup. Two practical limits follow from Ring's own numbers: every event clip and every live view uploads over cellular data at 2 to 15 Mbps depending on resolution, and the camera goes offline whenever the hotspot phone leaves. A dedicated cellular hotspot or an Alarm Pro on cellular is the durable version of the same idea.
What to check when a camera keeps dropping off Wi-Fi
Ring's offline guide lists the causes in order. Check that the device has power and, on battery models, a charged battery. Check that hardwired devices are on the correct transformer. Move the device closer to the router, add a Chime Pro as an extender, or switch to a 2.4 GHz network instead of 5 GHz. Restart the router and modem by unplugging them for 30 seconds. Test the internet speed against Ring's upload table, and remember that speed requirements add up across devices: Ring's example is a doorbell needing 2 Mbps plus a camera needing 3.5 Mbps, so the connection needs at least 5.5 Mbps upload. Having more than one router on the network can cause connection problems; Ring recommends removing the second router or putting it in bridge mode. As a last resort, factory reset the device by holding its setup button for 20 seconds and set it up again. When this guide does not apply
Ring Alarm sensors and the Alarm base station itself are different: an Alarm system with Cellular Backup can still signal the monitoring center without internet, which is separate from what the cameras can do. Ring Intercom and Car Cam have their own connectivity rules. Feature availability and data allowances above are for the United States and come from Ring's US pages as of September 2026.
