Ring Doorbell Not Charging? What Stops the Charge, and How Long the Battery Lasts

Below freezing, a Ring doorbell stops charging on purpose, and that is the cause people mistake for a dead battery. What each charging light means, what hardwiring and solar actually do, and why Ring will not tell you how long a battery lasts.

What to know

  1. Ring devices stop charging below freezing by design. They operate between -4°F and 122°F (-20°C and 50°C) and perform best around 75°F (25°C); Ring's advice for a cold device is to bring it indoors and charge it over USB.
  2. Hardwiring a battery doorbell gives a trickle charge, not a full one. Battery models need 8-24 VAC and 5-40 VA; wired models need 16-24 VAC and 10-40 VA.
  3. A solar charger needs three to four hours of direct sunlight a day and will not add charge above 90 percent, so an idle-looking panel on a nearly full battery is normal.
  4. A full charge takes up to 10 hours from a USB source rated at a minimum of 1 amp. Removable packs show green and amber while charging and are full when only green remains lit.
  5. Ring publishes no battery life figure beyond "months between charges", because the battery is spent per event. Device Health watched over a week or two is the only number that applies to your install.

A Ring doorbell that will not charge usually has one of four things wrong with it, and Ring documents all four. The battery is below freezing, in which case the device stops charging on purpose. The doorbell is hardwired, which supplies a trickle charge rather than a full one. A solar charger is not getting enough sun, or the battery is already above 90 percent and will not accept more. Or something ordinary has failed: the outlet, the cable, or the way the battery sits in the housing. A full charge takes up to 10 hours from a USB source rated at a minimum of 1 amp, so a battery that has barely moved after an hour is not yet evidence of a fault.

This is based on Ring's current support documentation, checked in September 2026. Ring renamed its doorbells and cameras in July and August 2026, so the model names below are the current ones and will not match articles written before that.

What "not charging" looks like on your model

Ring's battery doorbells come in two hardware types, and they report charge differently.

Models with a removable Quick Release Battery Pack hold the battery in a pack you slide out. Ring's current battery doorbells are the Battery Doorbell 2K, Battery Doorbell 2K Plus and Battery Doorbell 4K Pro, renamed on August 5, 2026 from Battery Doorbell (2nd Gen), Battery Doorbell Plus (2nd Gen) and Battery Doorbell Pro (2nd Gen). While the pack charges it shows two lights, a solid green and an amber one. It is full when only the green light remains lit.

Models with a built-in battery are charged with the whole doorbell lifted off its mounting bracket. Here there is no two-light pack to read. The circular LED on the front of the doorbell shows a solid light when the battery is full.

Both types are held on by the small star-shaped security screws that came in the box, and Ring is specific that those are the screws to use. After you put a charged battery back, give it up to 60 seconds to power on before deciding something is wrong.

Ring's battery cameras use the same Quick Release Battery Packs and behave the same way. That covers the Spotlight Cam, Stick Up Cam and Outdoor Cam families, including their Plus and Pro variants, with the same up to 10 hours to full and the same green and amber lights. Everything below about temperature, solar and drain applies to them too.

Below freezing, the doorbell stops charging on purpose

This is the cause that sends most people looking for a fault that is not there. Ring's documentation on extreme temperatures states it plainly: your device is designed to stop charging if the temperature is below freezing.

That is protective behavior for a lithium-ion battery, not a defect. The numbers Ring publishes around it:

  • Ring devices operate normally between -4°F and 122°F (-20°C and 50°C).
  • They perform optimally at around 75°F (25°C).
  • When the temperature drops to around freezing, battery life will not be as long.

Ring's own advice for a cold device is to stop waiting for it to charge where it hangs and bring it indoors to charge with a USB cable.

Two things Ring does not publish, and this guide will not invent: an exact cutoff temperature more precise than "below freezing", and how long a cold battery needs indoors before it starts accepting a charge again. If a doorbell refuses to charge outdoors in winter and then charges normally on a kitchen counter, that is the documented behavior rather than a failing battery.

Hardwired and still going flat: a trickle charge is not a charge

Ring's wording matters here. Hardwiring a battery-powered doorbell to existing doorbell wiring or a low-voltage transformer provides, in Ring's phrase, a trickle charge to the battery. It is a top-up, not the equivalent of plugging in the USB cable.

The transformer ratings Ring specifies:

  • Battery-powered doorbells: 8-24 VAC, 5-40 VA
  • Wired doorbells: 16-24 VAC, 10-40 VA
  • Several hardwired doorbells sharing one transformer: 16 VAC, 30 VA

Ring warns that the wrong rating can damage devices and stop an in-home chime working properly. The symptoms it lists for a doorbell that is not getting enough power:

  • The doorbell does not power on when connected to a compatible power source, or shows a flashing red light.
  • It loses power at night, or after the button is pressed.
  • The in-home chime does not ring, or rings, buzzes or hums by itself.
  • Power-hungry features such as Package Detection cannot be enabled.
  • The Ring app shows a poor power rating.

Where the documentation runs out: Ring does not publish a rate for the trickle charge, and its charging guide does not directly explain why a hardwired doorbell can still run down over time. What the documentation does support is that hardwiring maintains a battery rather than filling it, and that an undersized or failing transformer produces the symptoms above. So if the level keeps falling with the wiring connected, the transformer rating and the wiring itself are where Ring points first, and a USB charge will get the device back to full in the meantime.

Solar: three to four hours of sun, and the 90 percent ceiling

Ring asks for three to four hours of direct sunlight every day for a solar charger to keep a battery doorbell topped up over time.

The detail that looks like a fault and is not: the battery will only accept new charge below 90 percent. Above that it stops taking one. A solar panel sitting on a nearly full battery is supposed to look idle.

Ring's other stated limits:

  • Indoor light sources will not provide enough energy to charge a doorbell.
  • Solar is not ideal for covered porches and is not recommended indoors.
  • Stacking mounting kits can block the panel.
  • Extreme temperatures stop solar charging as well, for the same battery-protection reason.

Solar chargers are listed for the Video Doorbell 3, 3 Plus and 4, the Video Doorbell (2nd Gen), the Battery Doorbell Plus and Pro, and the Battery Doorbell 2K, 2K Plus and 4K Pro. The solar chargers for the Video Doorbell 2 and the 1st generation have been discontinued.

The ordinary causes: cable, adapter, seating, offline

Ring's own list of reasons a battery will not take a charge is short and unglamorous: a faulty outlet or charging cable, a solar charger that has failed, a removable battery that was not put back properly, and a device that is offline.

The charging requirements are worth checking against what you are actually using. Ring specifies the USB or USB-C cable included with the device, any USB power source, and a minimum output of 1 amp. An old laptop port or a low-output wall adapter can sit under that, which produces a battery that charges very slowly or appears not to charge at all.

The offline case is a reporting problem rather than a power problem. A doorbell that has lost its connection cannot send a fresh battery level, so the percentage in the app can be stale. How long a Ring battery lasts, and why Ring will not give you a number

Ring does not publish a battery life figure. Not per model, not in hours, not in days. The strongest statement in its support documentation is that batteries are made to last for months between charges.

That absence is the honest answer, and it is not evasion on Ring's part. A Ring battery is spent per event rather than per day. The more motion events, Live Views and linked events a device handles, the sooner it needs charging, and that number depends entirely on where the doorbell is pointed and how busy that spot is. A doorbell facing a quiet porch and one facing a sidewalk are running different workloads on the same hardware.

Any specific figure quoted elsewhere is therefore an estimate from someone's particular installation, not a specification. The number that actually applies to your doorbell is the one in the Ring app under Device Health, watched over a week or two of normal use.

What actually drains it

Ring's documented causes of faster than expected drain:

  • Event volume. The more Live Views, linked events and motion events, the more often you recharge.
  • Cold. Rechargeable batteries drain faster when it is cold outside.
  • A weak Wi-Fi signal. A device on a poor connection repeatedly disconnects and reconnects, and that cycle costs power.
  • Overcharging. Ring states that charging batteries too much can cause them to run out of power faster and take longer to charge.
  • Age. Performance degrades after extended use.

The settings Ring names for extending battery life all reduce how often the device wakes up: lower the motion sensitivity, adjust the motion zones, set motion frequency to Regularly or Periodically, point the device away from busy areas, and unlink Ring devices so one camera's event does not wake another.

Motion zones are the setting with the most room in them, because a zone that includes a public sidewalk will trigger all day. The field of view on each Ring model determines how much of the street you are asking the device to watch in the first place. When the battery itself is the problem

Ring acknowledges that battery performance degrades after extended use, without publishing a cycle count or a replacement interval. There is no documented number of charges after which a Ring battery is considered spent.

What that leaves is a practical test. If a battery reaches full on a USB charger, holds nothing like the time it used to at the same settings and the same season, and the device is not offline or hardwired to an undersized transformer, the pack is the remaining explanation.

On models with a removable Quick Release Battery Pack this is a part you can replace, and keeping a second pack charged turns a 10 hour outage into a swap. Doorbells with a built-in battery do not offer that, and a failing battery on those is a support case rather than a purchase.

A battery that is visibly swollen, damaged or hot should not be charged again. That is a contact-Ring situation, not a troubleshooting one.

When this guide does not apply

  • Wired doorbells with no battery. The Wired Doorbell 4K Elite, Wired Doorbell 2K, 2K Plus and 4K Pro draw their power from the transformer. A problem there is a power supply problem, and the transformer ratings above are the place to start.
  • A doorbell that will not power on at all, including one showing a flashing red light on a compatible power source. That points at supply rather than at the battery.
  • A Ring service outage. If the app cannot reach the device at all, check Ring's status page before dismantling anything.
