Standing Desk Not Going Up: What the Makers Say to Check, in Order
Watch what the desk does when you press up: nothing, down only, or a start and a stop. Each points somewhere else. The checks Uplift, FlexiSpot, Vari and Fully publish for each case, the anti-collision trigger a loose control box or a taut cable sets off, and where the makers say to stop and call.

What to know
- A desk that goes down but not up has its own entry in Uplift's troubleshooting: an obstruction or a false anti-collision trigger, then the hold-the-down-button reset, then a power cycle. FlexiSpot's answer to the same symptom is a reset.
- Uplift says a control box that is not attached firmly and flush can falsely trigger its gyroscopic anti-collision sensor, that cords right under the control box will trigger it, and that a cord pulled taut as the desk rises is likely doing the same.
- A desk that does nothing at all is a power, lock or cable question before it is a control box question: test the outlet, check the keypad lock, reseat the cables, then reset.
- A desk that rises and then stops has either hit something or run into its duty cycle: Uplift and FlexiSpot allow about 2 minutes of movement in 20, and Vari asks for 20 minutes of rest after H01.
- Legs at different heights are the stopping point in the two guides that mention it: Uplift says to contact support at a difference of more than 1.5 in (3.8 cm); Fully says to stop troubleshooting the moment a Jarvis becomes uneven.
Press up and watch what the desk does, because the answer depends on it. If the desk goes down but refuses to go up, Uplift's troubleshooting entry for that symptom is four steps: clear the space around it, check the control box, reset, then power-cycle; FlexiSpot's answer to the same symptom is a reset. If it does nothing in either direction, start with power and the keypad lock. If it starts to rise and then stops or backs down, it has hit something, or thinks it has, or it has used up its duty cycle. Legs that end up at different heights are where Uplift and Fully both say to stop and call.
The steps come from the manufacturers' own instructions: Uplift's troubleshooting page and its V2 frame instructions, the FlexiSpot E7 Mini manual, Vari's control panel codes page, and Fully's Jarvis reset guide. Other models from the same brands can have a different control box, so check the sheet that came with yours if it is not one of these. The reset itself, hold by hold and per brand, is in the ASR guide.
Desk goes down but not up
Uplift's troubleshooting page has an entry for a desk that is "only going down and not up". Its four steps, in Uplift's order:
- Clear the space. Uplift: check for any obstruction that could be interfering with the desk's motion, and move anything too close above, below or beside it. That includes a shelf above the desk, not only a chair below it.
- Check the control box. Uplift's wording: make sure the control box "is attached firmly and flush to either the desk frame or desktop. If it is not secured or if it's uneven, the gyroscopic sensor for the anti-collision system can be falsely triggered." A control box left hanging by one screw after a move fits that description.
- Reset. Uplift's hold-the-down-button reset; FlexiSpot's table lists "Only decreases / Only increases" and "Desk does not rise or lower the full distance" with one solution, "Reset the desk". The per-brand sequences are in the ASR guide.
- Power cycle. If the reset does not take, Uplift's next step: plug something else into the same outlet to confirm it has power (if not, the breaker may need resetting), check every cable is inserted firmly, unplug the desk, hold the down button for a full 30 seconds to discharge the control box, plug it back in and run the reset again.
Two checks that Uplift's entry does not have come from the other makers and from Uplift's own F500 instructions; we would run them after the four above, because they take a minute each.
- Weight. FlexiSpot's table maps "slow ascent" and a desktop that slips during ascent to one check: whether the load exceeds 352 lb (160 kg), the E7 Mini frame's rating without the desktop. Vari treats overload as a code, E03 on its Electric Standing Desks and E01 on the Essential model, with the instruction to remove items and reset. Uplift's page lists no weight step for this symptom. If the desk has gained a second monitor on an arm, a PC and a printer since it was bought, the frame is lifting all of that plus the top, and the frame's own sheet is the number to check against.
- A height limit. On Uplift Advanced Keypads other than the Advanced Paddle Keypad, a maximum height can be set on purpose, and the desk will not rise past it. The F500 instructions remove it: tap "M" once until "S-" shows, then hold "M" until the display shows "555". If the desk always stops at the same height short of the top, look here before anything mechanical.
If it still will not rise after the power cycle, Uplift's page moves to the cable-swap diagnosis in the last section.
Desk does nothing at all
None of the four guides has one entry that covers every cause of a desk that ignores both buttons; the checks below are collected from all four, in the order we would use, because the first three cost nothing and each later one assumes the earlier ones passed.
- Power. Uplift's test is the outlet: plug something else into it. Then the cables, all of them, pushed in firmly. FlexiSpot's first table row is the same: "Electronic functions are not working properly", solution "Verify cables are connected correctly".
- The keypad lock. On Uplift Advanced Keypads (the F500 instructions exclude the Advanced Paddle Keypad), holding "M" until the display shows "LOC" locks the keypad; holding "M" again until the current height shows unlocks it. Uplift adds that after a power outage the keypad returns to unlocked. On the FlexiSpot E7 Mini the child lock is the "M" button held for about 5 seconds, and a blue indicator light shows when it is on. A desk that ignores every press with the lock light on is locked.
- A reset prompt on the display. "ASr", "RST" or "RESET" on the screen means the control box is waiting for a reset. The sequence per brand is in the ASR guide.
- Power cycle and reseat. Uplift: unplug, hold down for 30 seconds, plug back in, reset. Fully's Jarvis guide has you remove obstructions, check that the control box is firmly attached and that the right leg cables are in use, and then reseat everything before any handset reset: unplug the desk, unplug every cable under it including both ends of the leg cables, reconnect all but the power cable, then plug in and do the handset reset. FlexiSpot's "Desk remains at lowest height" row has the same single answer as the others: reset.
- The control box itself. Uplift's page says that 70 percent of the control boxes returned to it for replacement are not defective and would have been fixed by the reset. Run the reset and the power cycle before asking for a replacement.
Desk rises, then stops or reverses
A desk that starts up and quits partway has either met resistance or reached its duty cycle.
Anti-collision. Uplift's "moves but stops" entry says the desk "may be stopping because it is obstructed or incorrectly senses that it is obstructed", and gives four places to look: an obstruction above, below or beside the desk; a control box that is not flush; "any other cables or cords positioned immediately below the control box", which Uplift says will trigger the anti-collision system; and a tight cord. For that last one Uplift gives a test: raise the desk while watching every cord, and if one tightens, Uplift says it is "likely triggering the anti-collision system". A monitor cable, a power strip cord or an Ethernet cable that was cut to sitting height is the kind of cord this finds. Uplift's F500 instructions add one more cause for a desk that keeps starting and stopping: the control box "MUST be attached to your frame in order for your desk to function properly", so check that it has not come loose. FlexiSpot's version is the row "The desk moves up when the Down button is pressed", with the solution "check for any obstructions beneath the desk or any hanging cables": on that frame the collision response is a reversal, so a desk that seems to go the wrong way is reporting a bump.
If nothing is in the way and it still stops, the sensitivity can be turned down. Uplift's Advanced Keypads have three levels, 10.5 (most sensitive) to 10.7 (least), set from the flashing "ASr" display with the up button; the F500 instructions have the steps. The FlexiSpot E7 Mini has four, "A-0" (off) to "A-3" (high), switched by holding up and down together for 5 seconds. FlexiSpot's manual adds a caution about its own function: the anti-collision rebound "is triggered only after contact has occurred" and "does not provide contact-free protection", and it may be less likely to activate on soft or flexible objects.
Duty cycle. A desk that has been run up and down repeatedly, during cabling or while trying to fix something else, stops on purpose. Uplift's motor has a 10 percent duty cycle: in a 20-minute period, 2 minutes of movement and 18 of rest, "otherwise you may see an H01 code". Vari's H01 is "motor overuse": after more than 2 minutes of continuous adjustment the desk "will display this code and cease working temporarily", and Vari says to resume after 20 minutes. FlexiSpot's troubleshooting table gives a maximum of 2 minutes on and 18 minutes off, with the instruction to let the desk idle for 18 minutes with the power connected, and its keypad guide adds that the full-load lift time "shall not exceed the maximum touch time of 45 seconds". Uplift and Vari publish no fix for H01 other than the wait.
One side higher, or a code that will not clear
Two makers set the same stopping point. Uplift says to contact support "if the error message persists after performing the reset procedure or if there is a height difference between the Legs of more than 1.5"" (3.8 cm). Fully's Jarvis guide says that if the desk "becomes lopsided at any point, stop troubleshooting and contact us." FlexiSpot's manual and Vari's page say nothing about uneven legs; on those desks the same two signs, a visible tilt or a code that survives the reset, are the point to contact the maker.
Before that point, Uplift has one diagnosis for a code in the E07 to E12 range or for uneven legs, and it produces two of the three things Uplift's support form asks for: the code you started with and whether it changed (the third is the steps you have tried). Try the reset first if you have not; then unplug the desk, discharge the control box with a 30-second hold, unplug the keypad cable and both leg cables from the control box, plug the leg cables back into each other's ports (M1 to M2, M2 to M1), reconnect the rest, plug in and reset. If the code changes from E01 to E07 or back, Uplift says the problem is on the M1 port; from E02 to E08 or back, on the M2 port. Uplift's page also says that "the problem is often solved simply due to cables being disconnected and then reconnected securely". Vari's codes work the same way without the swap: E01 and E02 are leg cables, E07 and E08 are the M1 and M2 ports not fully secured, and the instruction for each is to disconnect, reconnect and reset, and to contact Vari if the code persists.
