How Much Weight Can a Standing Desk Hold, and What Does a PC Weigh?
Desk ratings here run from 50 to 161 kg (110 to 355 lb), and the desktop counts against some of them and not others. What computers, monitors and tops weigh, three setups added up, and the two limits a small home office reaches first: a clamp on a thin top and cable slack.

What to know
- The electric desks here are rated for 60 to 161 kg (132 to 355 lb), IKEA's crank TROTTEN for 50 kg (110 lb). The top counts against Uplift's 355 lb; FlexiSpot's 352 lb says "desktop not included" without saying whether the top counts, so we would count it.
- The desktop can outweigh everything on it: 15 to 29 kg (34 to 65 lb) for an Uplift laminate top, 37 kg (82.5 lb) for a 60 by 30 solid wood one, 4.6 to 8.8 kg (10 to 19 lb) for IKEA's paper-filled LINNMON and LAGKAPTEN.
- A PC weighs from 0.67 kg (1.5 lb) for a Mac mini to 14 to 18 kg (31 to 40 lb) for a Lenovo Legion gaming tower; a 24-inch iMac is 4.4 kg (9.7 lb) and a Lenovo IdeaCentre tower 4.9 kg (10.8 lb).
- A gaming tower on the desk with two 27-inch Dell monitors on their stands is about 32 kg (70 lb); with a laminate top that is under half of a 355 lb rating, and on its own it is inside every rating here, the crank TROTTEN's 110 lb included.
- The limit you reach first is concentrated load: IKEA's LINNMON and LAGKAPTEN tops allow 15 kg (33 lb) on a small area and IKEA says they are not suitable for a screen stand, while a dual arm with two 27-inch panels puts roughly 14 kg (30 lb) on one clamp.
- A tower on the floor needs cable slack for the desk's full travel, 66 cm (26 in) on an Uplift V3; Uplift says a cord that tightens as the desk rises is likely triggering the anti-collision system.
A home office setup comes nowhere near the rating of a standing desk. The electric desks in the small-office desk guide are rated between 132 and 355 lb (60 to 161 kg), and a gaming tower on the desk with two 27-inch monitors on their stands comes to about 70 lb (32 kg). Check first what the rating includes. Uplift's 355 lb includes the desktop; FlexiSpot gives 352 lb with "desktop not included" and does not say whether the top counts against it. An Uplift desktop alone weighs 34 to 82 lb (15 to 37 kg).
Two limits matter more than the total in a small office: a monitor-arm clamp on a thin top, where IKEA's 33 lb (15 kg) concentrated-load limit is the number, and the slack in the cables between a tower on the floor and a desk that rises 26 in (66 cm).
What the rating includes: the top counts on some desks and not on others
Uplift rates its two-leg desks at 355 lb with the top included: even with a solid wood top, about 250 lb remain for monitors and everything else on the desk. FlexiSpot gives 352 lb for the E7 Mini with the words "desktop not included", and does not say whether the top comes on top of that figure or out of it. We would count the top against it, because that leaves the larger margin.
The other makers give one number for the finished desk:
- Desky Dual Mini. Up to 150 kg (330.7 lb).
- Autonomous Desk 2. 113 kg (250 lb) on the two-stage frame, 141 kg (310 lb) on the three-stage one.
- Autonomous Desk Core. 80 kg (176 lb).
- Branch Duo. 125 kg (275 lb).
- Vari Electric Standing Desk. 100 kg (220 lb) in 40 by 26 and 48 by 30, 91 kg (200 lb) in 54 by 26 and 60 by 30.
- IKEA, max load. 80 kg (176 lb) for the MITTZON, 60 kg (132 lb) for the electric BOLLSIDAN, 50 kg (110 lb) for the crank TROTTEN, and 50 kg (110 lb 4 oz) for a LINNMON tabletop on its own.
IKEA does not say what max load includes. For its tabletops it calls the same kind of figure "maximum evenly distributed weight", so our reading is that it is the weight you put on the finished desk, top not counted.
A desktop alone can outweigh a laptop-and-monitor setup, and it is easy to leave out of the sum. Uplift's laminate tops weigh 34 to 65 lb (15 to 29 kg) depending on size; its 1.75-inch Walnut Wide Plank solid wood top is about 6.6 lb per square foot, so a 60 by 30 top comes to around 82.5 lb (37 kg). IKEA's tops have a honeycomb paper filling and weigh little: a LAGKAPTEN 120 by 60 cm is 19 lb 5 oz (8.8 kg) and a LINNMON 100 by 60 cm 10 lb 2 oz (4.6 kg). On an Uplift that is the difference between 321 lb and 290 lb left over, and on a FlexiSpot frame we would subtract it the same way.
How much does a PC or a monitor weigh?
The weight of a computer varies with its configuration, as Apple and Lenovo both note, and the spread between models is wider than between the desk ratings:
- Small desktops. A Mac mini is 1.5 lb (0.67 kg) with the M6 chip and 1.6 lb (0.73 kg) with the M5 Pro; a Mac Studio 6.0 lb (2.7 kg) with the M5 Max and 8.0 lb (3.6 kg) with the M5 Ultra. Lenovo's IdeaCentre Tower 14IRR9, a mainstream tower, is around 4.9 kg (10.8 lb).
- All-in-one. The 24-inch iMac is 9.74 lb (4.42 kg) with two ports and 9.79 lb (4.44 kg) with four, monitor included.
- Gaming towers. The Lenovo Legion T5 26IRB8 is around 14 kg (30.86 lb) and the Legion T7 34IAS10 around 18 kg (39.68 lb), both approximate and depending on the parts fitted. An empty case outweighs the complete IdeaCentre tower: NZXT's H5 Flow mid-tower is 7.28 kg (16.0 lb) and Fractal Design's North 7.6 kg (16.8 lb) before a single part goes in.
- Laptops. A MacBook Air is 2.7 lb (1.23 kg) at 13 inches and 3.3 lb (1.51 kg) at 15.
- Monitors. A Dell P2422H is 12.28 lb (5.57 kg) on its stand with cables and 7.47 lb (3.39 kg) as a bare panel; the 27-inch P2722H 14.93 lb (6.77 kg) and 9.66 lb (4.38 kg). The stand is 3.9 to 4.2 lb (1.8 to 1.9 kg) of that, which is what an arm replaces.
So a "PC" is anywhere from 1.5 lb to 40 lb, and where it sits matters more than which one it is.
Three setups, added up against the ratings
The sums below use the weights above; peripherals, a lamp and a mug are not in them.
- Laptop and one monitor. A 13-inch MacBook Air and a P2422H on its stand: 2.7 plus 12.28 is 15 lb (6.8 kg). Every desk here carries that with its rating barely touched, including the 110 lb TROTTEN.
- Two 27-inch panels on a dual arm, plus a Mac Studio. Two bare P2722H panels are 19.32 lb (8.76 kg); Uplift's single Crestview arm is 11.2 lb (5.1 kg), so call a dual arm about that or more. That is roughly 30 lb (14 kg) hanging from one clamp, plus 6 to 8 lb of Mac Studio elsewhere on the top: 36 to 39 lb (16 to 18 kg) in total, and it is the 30 lb on the clamp that matters, not the total.
- A gaming tower on the desk with two monitors on stands. A Legion T7 at 39.68 lb plus two P2722H on their stands at 29.86 lb is 69.5 lb (31.5 kg). Add a laminate top and an Uplift is carrying 104 to 135 lb of its 355; a FlexiSpot frame with the same top counted stays just as far under its 352. On IKEA's BOLLSIDAN the same 70 lb sits under the 132 lb max load, and even the TROTTEN's 110 lb covers it.
The limit you reach first: a clamp on a thin top
IKEA's LINNMON and LAGKAPTEN tops carry two limits: 110 lb evenly distributed, and no more than 33 lb of concentrated weight on a small surface. IKEA also says the tops are "not suitable for installation of a screen stand". A monitor-arm clamp is a concentrated weight on a small surface, and setup 2 above puts about 30 lb on it: under 33, but not by much, and one heavier pair of panels takes it over. The monitor arm guide works this through per arm and per panel.
Uplift's example points the other way: it says three arms carrying 20-lb displays stay well within standard weight capacity on its desks. Both statements are right for their own desk. The limit that applies is the one for the top the clamp is on, and on a LINNMON or LAGKAPTEN that is 33 lb, whatever frame it is bolted to. IKEA also says LINNMON is not for its office underframes, as the desk guide notes.

A tower on the desk or on the floor: what the cables do when the desk moves
In a bedroom office the tower has two places to go: on the desk, where it costs width, or on the floor, where every cable to the monitors, the keyboard and the outlet has to be long enough for the desk's full travel. An Uplift V3 frame runs from 21.6 to 47.7 in, so a cable that is comfortable at sitting height has to give up 26 in (66 cm) by the top. Raise the desk once while watching every cord. A cord that pulls tight is likely triggering the anti-collision system, Uplift says, and the symptom is a desk that rises and then stops. The not-going-up guide has the rest of that list. A tower on the desk moves with everything else and needs slack only for its power cord and network cable, which is why the 40 lb up top can be the simpler choice on a small desk.
Overload, when it does happen, does not look dramatic on these desks. On a FlexiSpot E7 Mini the signs are slow lifting, a desktop that slips on the way up and a keypad that keeps going into reset, and the fix is to check the load against 352 lb. A Vari desk shows overload as code E03, with the instruction to remove items and reset. We would take a desk that lifts slowly under a heavy top and a tower as a load question before a motor question.
